f)Scholars' Opinions.
Biddat(innovation) basically means anything which is
introduced in the religion of Islam which has got no Evidence from Quran,Sunnah
or from Sahaba. If we do with the intention of gaining thawab(reward) it would
be considered as Biddah.
a)Importance of following Prophet Muhammad(sallal lahu
alihi wasaalam).
Proof:-1
Allah says,"But nay, by thy lord,
they will not believe (in truth) until they make thee(O prophet Mohammed(Pbuh)
judge of what is in dispute between them and find within themselves no
dislike of that which thou decidest, and submit with full submission.(Surah
Nisa verse:65)
Proof:-2
"And those who oppose the Apostle after the obvious
truth to him, and follow the path that is not the way believers, We let him
freely against the fallacy that they have learned it and We insert it into the
Jahannam, and Jahannam was an evil refuge! . '(Surah An Nisa' [4]: 115)

Sahih BukhariVolume 9 : Book 92 : Hadith 384 :
Narrated by Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "All my
followers will enter Paradise except those who refuse." They said, "O
Allah's Apostle! Who will refuse?" He said,"Whoever obeys me will enter Paradise, and whoever
disobeys me is the one who refuses (to enter it)."
Proof:-4
Sahih Muslim Book 30, Number 5670:
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon
him) as saying: The similitude of mine and that of my Umma is that of a person
who lit fire and there began to fall into it insects and moths. And I am there
to hold you back, but you plunge into it.
b)Evil of Biddat(innovation) in Islam.

وَأَتۡمَمۡتُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ نِعۡمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ ٱلۡإِسۡلَـٰمَ دِينً۬اۚ
Allah says,''This day I have perfected for you your religion
and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.

Jabir b. Abdullah said: When Allah's Messenger (may peace he
upon him) delivered the sermon, his eyes became red, his voice rose. and his
anger increased so that he was like one giving a warning against the enemy and
saying:" The enemy has made a morning attack on you and in the evening
too." He would also say:" The last Hour and I have been sent like
these two." and he would join his forefinger and middle finger; and would
further say:" The best of the speech is embodied in the Book of Allah, and
the beet of the guidance is the guidance given by Muhammad. And the most evil
affairs are their innovations; and every innovation is error."
Proof:-7
It was narrated that Jabir bin 'Abdullah said:"In his Khutbah the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) used to praise Allah as He deserves to be praised, then he would say: 'Whomsoever Allah (SWT) guides, none can lead him astray, and whomsoever Allah sends astray, none can guide. The truest of word is the Book of Allah and best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of things are those that are newly invented; every newly-invented thing is an innovation and every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire.' Then he said: 'The Hour and I have been sent like these two.' Whenever he mentioned the Hour, his cheeks would turn red, and he would raise his voice and become angry, as if he were warning of an approaching army and saying: 'An army is coming to attack you in the morning, or in the evening!' (Then he said): 'Whoever leaves behind wealth, it is for his family, and whoever leaves behind a debt or dependents, then these are my responsibility, and I am the most entitled to take care of the believers.'" Biddat(innovation) in Islam is rejected. Not in worldly affairs(Duniyai

Sahih Bukhari Volume 7, Book 62, No. 1,
Narrated Anas bin Malik:A group of three men came to the houses of the wives of the
Prophet May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him asking how the Prophet
worshipped (Allah), and when they were informed about that, they considered
their worship insufficient and said, "Where are we from the Prophet as his
past and future sins have been forgiven." Then one of them said, "I
will offer the prayer throughout the night forever." The other said,
"I will fast throughout the year and will not break my fast." The
third said, "I will keep away from the women and will not marry
forever." Allah's Apostle came to them and said, "Are you the same
people who said so-and-so? By Allah, I am more submissive to Allah and more
afraid of Him than you; yet I fast and break my fast, I do sleep and I also
marry women. So he who does not follow my tradition in religion, is not from me
(not one of my followers)."

Tirmidhi Hadith -#417
A desert Arab came to Allah's Apostle and asked him about
ablution. He demonstrated (washing each part of his body) thrice, and then
said: That is (the method) of the ablution. And he who does more than this has
done wrong, transgressed the limit and has oppressed (himself).
Comments:-Apparently washing hands looks good, still prophet
forbideen us why? because Biddah leads you astray

Sahih Muslim Book 34, Number 6466:
Jarir b. Abdullah reported that some desert Arabs clad in
woollen clothes came to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him). He saw them
in sad plight as they had been hard pressed by need. He (the Holy Prophet)
exhorted people to give charity, but they showed some reluctance until (signs)
of anger could be seen on his face. Then a person from the Ansar came with a
purse containing silver. Then came another person and then other persons
followed them in succession until signs of happiness could be seen on his
(sacred) face. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: He who
introduced some good practice (Sunnat-e-Hasna) in Islam which was followed
after him (by people) he would be assured of reward like one who followed it,
without their rewards being diminished in any respect. And he who introduced
some evil practice in Islam which had been followed subsequently (by others),
he would be required to bear the burden like that of one who followed this
(evil practice) without their's being diminished in any respect

(Commentary:-The above Hadith used the word ''سُنَّةً حَسَنَةً ''Sunnat-e-Hasna" meaning Good sunnah not 'Biddat-e-Hasna'
as it is well Known fact that 'Sunnah' means the tradition of Prophet(peace
be upon him) unfortunately this hadith is mis-used by barelwis but the Hadith
emphasis If you review a dead Sunnah of
Prophet it is considered as Sunnah-e-Hasna for more explanation of that Hadith
let's take a look at another Hadith)..

Abu Abdur Rahmaan, these are pebbles to count the number of times we say Allah-u Akbar, La ilaaha Illallah, and Subhaanallah."He said:"Countyour evil deeds, and I assure you that you are not going to lose anything of your rewards (Hasanat).Woe unto you, people of Muhammad, how quickly you go to destruction! Those are your Prophet's companions available, these are his clothes not worn out yet, and his pots are not broken yet. I swear by Whom my soul is in His Hands that you are either following a religion that is better than the Prophet's religion or you are opening a door of misguidance."They said:"We swear by Allah Almighty, oh, Abu Abdur Rahmaan, that we had no intention other than doing good deeds."He said:"So what? How many people wanted to do good deeds but never got todo them? The Prophet of Allah has told us about people who recited the Qur'ân with no effect on them other than the Qur'ân passing through their throats. I swear by Allah, I am almost sure that most of you are from that type of people."Then he left them.umar Ibn Salamah (the sub narrator) said:"We saw most of the people of those circles fighting against us with the Khawaarij in the battle of An-Nahrawan."

Narrated Abu Wail:I sat with Shaiba in this Mosque (Al-Masjid-Al-Haram), and he said, "`Umar once sat beside me here as you are now sitting, and said, 'I feel like distributing all the gold and silver that are in it (i.e., the Ka`ba) among the Muslims'.I said, 'You cannot do that.' `Umar said, 'Why?' I said, 'Your two (previous) companions (the Prophet (sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and Abu Bakr) did not do it. `Umar said, 'They are the two persons whom one must follow.'" who extinguish the Sunnah. and follow innovation. They will delay the prayer
from its proper time." I said: "0 Messenger of Allah, if I live to

(Hasan)(Sunan Ibn-Majah vol.2 Hadith 1025)
e)Scholars' Opinions on Biddah(Innovation)..
Ibn Abbaas (d. 68H) said: "Indeed the most detestable of things to Allaah are the innovations." Reported by al-Bayhaqee in as-Sunan al-Kubraa (4/316)
Ahmad Ibn Hanbal once said, "The greatest sinner (faasiq) from the Ahl-Sunnah Wal Jamaah (one following rasool and his companions) is better than the most pious person from Ahl-"Bid'ah".
'Abdullaah ibn Mas'ood, said, "Follow and do not innovate, for you have been given that which is sufficient and every innovation is misguidance." Reported by Abu Khaithamah in Kitaab Ul-'Ilm (no. 540) and declared saheeh by Shaikh al-Albaanee.
Abdullah ibn Mas'ood also said : إِنَّ لِلَّهِ عِنْدَ كُلِّ بِدْعَةٍ كِيدَ بِهَا الإِسْلامُ وَلِيًّا مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِهِ يَذُبُّ عَنْهَا , وَيَنْطِقُ بِعَلامَتِهَا , فَاغْتَنِمُوا حُضُورَ تِلْكَ الْمَوَاطِنِ , وَتَوَكَّلُوا عَلَى اللَّهِ "For every bid’ah with which Islâm is plotted against, Allah has a beloved worshipper (walî) who refutes and repels it and speaks about its signs, so take the full opportunity of attending such places, and trust in Allah.[Ibn Waddah, Al-Bid'ah (Hadith 4)] Abdullah Ibn Abbaas said, "When "Bid'ah" is created then the Sunnah dies and this continues until that "Bid'ah" is living and the Sunnah is dead." 'Umar ibn 'Abd Allah-'Azeez said, "There is no excuse for anyone, after the Sunnah, to be misguided upon error which he thought was guidance." |
‘Umar b. ‘Abd Al-’Azîz – Allah have mercy on him, said, “The Messenger of Allâh – Allâh’s peace and blessings be upon him – and the authorities (leaders of the Muslims, the Caliphs ) after him set certain ways and practices. To follow those ways is to believe in Allâh’s Book and to complete [ones] obedience of Him, and to be strong upon the religion of Allâh. It is not for anyone to alter those ways or change them for something else, and it is not for anyone to consider the views and opinions of those who contradict them. Whoever follows what [the Prophet and his Caliphs] laid down will be guided, whoever seeks enlightenment through it will be enlightened. But whoever contradicts those ways and follows a way other than the way of the Believers, Allâh the Mighty and Majestic will leave him in the path he has chosen and land him in Jahannam (Hell); and what an evil destination that is.’”[Al-Lâlakâ`î, Sharh Usûl I’tiqâd Ahl Al-Sunnah 1:94.]
‘Abdullâh the son of Al-Imâm Ahmad reports that his father, Al-Imâm Ahmad, said, “The graves of Ahl Al-Sunnah who committed major sins are gardens (from Paradise) whilst the graves of the heretics (adherents of Bid’ah) who were ascetics are pits (from the Fire). The sinners from Ahl Al-Sunnah are the beloved (awliyâ`) of Allâh, whereas the ascetics of Ahl Al-Bid’ah are the enemies of Allâh.”[Ibn Abî Ya’lâ, Tabaqât Al-Hanâbilah Vol. 1 p182.]
Imaam Maalik (rahimahullaah) in a reported saying of his that ought to be recorded in golden ink. And it is his saying: "Whosoever introduces into Islaam an innovation, which he deems is good, then he has claimed that Muhammad has betrayed (the trust of conveying) the Message. Read the saying of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic: 'This day I have completed your Religion for you, and I have perfected My favour upon you, and I am pleased with Islaam as a Religion for you.' [Surat-ul-Maa'idah: 3] So whatever was not (part of) the Religion on that day, is not (part of) the Religion on this day. And the last part of this ummah (nation) will not be rectified, except by that which its first part was rectified by."
Imâm Al-Shâfi’î said:Whenever any people of desires (heretics) came to Mâlik he would say to them, “As for me, I am upon clarity as regards my religion. As for you, you are a doubter, go and argue with another doubter like yourself.”[Al-Dhahbî in Siyar A’lâm Al-Nubalâ’ under the biography of Imâm Mâlik.]
It is reported that Abul-Jawzâ` – Allâh have mercy on him – said, “I would prefer to sit with swine than to sit with the people of desires (heretics, adherents of bid’ah).”
[Al-Dhahabî, Siyar A’lâm Al-Nubalâ`, in his biography of the Abul-Jawzâ`. He reported from a number of Companions, and Al-Dhahabî considered him to be one of the senior scholars.]
Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar al-‘Asqallaani (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
Innovation in the shar‘i sense is blameworthy, unlike innovation in the linguistic sense. Anything that is newly introduced without precedent may be called an innovation, whether it is praiseworthy or blameworthy.
"فالبدعة في عرف الشرع مذمومة ، بخلاف اللغة ، فإن كل شيء أُحدث على غير مثال يسمى بدعة سواء كان محموداً ، أو مذموماً" انتهى .
(Fath al-Baari, 13/253)
With regard to innovations (bida‘, pl. of bid‘ah), this word refers to everything for which there is no precedent. In linguistic terms it includes both praiseworthy and blameworthy matters, but among the scholars of Islam it usually refers to that which is blameworthy. If the word is applied to something that is praiseworthy, then it is to be understood according to its linguistic meaning. End quote.
(Fath al-Baari, 13/340)
